The Centre for Subtropical Design – a partnership between The Queensland University of Technology and the Brisbane City Council invites you to Subtropical Cities 2006.

Subtropical Cities 2006 conference aims to raise the level of public debate about achieving ecologically sustainable urbanism in subtropical settlements through attention to climate responsive design.

Join practitioners and academics from other key subtropical locations from around the world at this unique conference.

About the Conference
The conference seeks to widen the forum by including social, cultural and environmental issues, public and private projects, planning arboriculture, horticulture, landscape and urban design.

Subtropical Cities 2006 promises to re-awaken in us a sense of excitement about how we can plan and design an appropriate urbanism that is enriched by social, cultural and environmental care.

Subtropical Cities 2006 aims to raise the level of public debate about design, how we live in a subtropical climate and achieving urbanization and densification in this environment. The crucial issues are how to give meaning and scale to built form providing user-friendly public and private spaces and fulfilling other environmentally responsible considerations.

Themes

The unifying theme of the conference is urbanism in a subtropical humid environment.

Sub themes include:

1. Local Distinctiveness and Issues of Place (Sense – look/feel)

• Identity and culture
• Creative Interpretation – literature, art and music
• Subtropical Character and Identity
• Imaginings and Perceptions


2. Sustainable Built Environments in Subtropical Latitudes (Physical Form)

• Urbanisation in a subtropical environment
• Good design in the subtropics – local, neighbourhood and regional approaches
• Compact subtropical urban development – containing sprawl/urban footprints and boundaries
• Public transport integration


3. Subtropical Communities – Life and living in the subtropics

• Opportunities for invention and collaboration
• Experimentation and diversity
• Low energy strategies for development


4. Subtropical City landscapes (in between and beyond)

• Urban landscapes
• Spaces for cultural exchange, activities and events
• Greening and cleaning
• Regeneration, renewal and the future
